Protect refugees at risk during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Burma’s government is making it harder to protect the most vulnerable against COVID-19.
For decades, the Burmese military has prioritised military spending over health spending, leaving Burma in a very weak position to deal with the COVID-19 crisis. The Burmese military (the Tatmadaw) has a long history of violent attacks on religious and ethnic minorities in Burma.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the predominantly Christian Chin and Kachin ethnic groups, as well as Rohingya Muslims, living in refugee camps, have become even more vulnerable.
